Trained counselors provide free and confidential emotional support and crisis counseling to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress, and connect them to resources. These services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, across the United States.and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals.

A mental health emergency is a life threatening situation in which an individual is imminently threatening harm to self or others, severely disoriented or out of touch with reality, has a severe inability to function, or is otherwise distraught and/or out of control.

Examples of a Mental Health Emergency include:

  • acting on a suicide threat

  • homicidal or threatening behavior

  • self-injury that needs immediate medical attention

  • severe impairment by drugs or alcohol

  • highly erratic or unusual behavior 

  • inability to care for self
